Mantras for Kids Yoga

What is mantra? In our Canadian culture, a mantra is most often any word or phrase that you can say (privately to yourself, or out loud) as a point of focus. By bringing your attention to the word or phrase, other thoughts can more easily drop from your mind. When the mantra has a special meaning to you, that meaning also comes into focus. Statements that affirm our confidence, compassion, and trust in ourselves can empower us on and off the mat. As kids develop their sense of identity, it is important to give them opportunities to reflect on their many strengths. Mantra can be a great way to achieve this!

Here’s a tip!

As for as mantras go, it’s better to focus on the alternative than the negative. So, for example I will say, “I am strong,” instead of, “I am not weak.” Our brains engage in some funny business when we tell them not to think of something. For example, if I tell you, ‘don’t think of elephants,’ what are you thinking of? Exactly the same is true for mantra. Try to use an “I am-” statement. This phrasing is very affirmative and powerful.

When can I use mantras?

Anytime, day or night. You can use them in meditation, yoga class, or as a reminder of your greatest Self. You can bring them into art projects which can then be displayed in your home, school, or other safe spaces.
